Seven areas, one ethos

The EYFS curriculum, through an Islamic lens

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the national framework every English school builds on. We deliver all seven areas in full — and weave each one together with your child's Islamic identity.

Communication & language

In the EYFS
Listening, attention, understanding and speaking — the foundation for all other learning.
At Iqra
Circle-time discussion, storytelling from the Seerah, and learning to express feelings with kind words.

Personal, social & emotional development

In the EYFS
Managing feelings, building relationships, and growing in confidence and independence.
At Iqra
Daily practice of Islamic manners (adab) — sharing, patience, saying salaam, and caring for friends.

Physical development

In the EYFS
Gross and fine motor skills through active play, movement and healthy routines.
At Iqra
Energetic outdoor play, healthy halal snacks, and learning wudu routines that build independence.

Literacy

In the EYFS
A lifelong love of reading — from rhymes and stories to early phonics and mark-making.
At Iqra
Living our name: Iqra means "read". English phonics alongside gentle familiarity with Arabic letters.

Mathematics

In the EYFS
Counting, number patterns, shapes, space and measures through hands-on exploration.
At Iqra
Counting in play and song — and noticing the beautiful geometry in Islamic patterns around us.

Understanding the world

In the EYFS
Making sense of people, places, nature and technology through observation and discovery.
At Iqra
Wonder at Allah's creation — planting, seasons, animals — and celebrating our community's diversity.

Expressive arts & design

In the EYFS
Exploring materials, colour, texture, music, dance and imaginative role play.
At Iqra
Nasheeds, geometric art and crafts for Ramadan and Eid — creativity with meaning.

How a day feels

A typical session moves gently between free play, small-group learning, story time, outdoor play and shared meals — opening with the morning du'a and closing with a song or story. Children learn because they're absorbed, not because they're drilled.

Every child has a key person who tracks their progress across all seven areas and shares it with you regularly — so the journey to school readiness is one we make together.
